What is Challenge Success? Challenge Success is a research project founded at Stanford University. Originally it was called SOS-Stressed-Out Students Project. The name changed to Challenge Success in an attempt to encapsulate the broader vision and focus of the project. The mission of Challenge Success is to inform, inspire and equip youth, parents and schools to adopt practices that expand options for youth success. Challenge Success believes that real success results from attention to the basic developmental needs of children and a valuing of different types of skills and abilities. A six-week course presented by Challenge Success This is a hands-on, interactive course designed to help parents find a healthy balance between achievement and personal fulfillment for their children. During this six-week course, we will explore this central question: What is success, and how can I foster it in today’s fast-paced, performance-based culture? We will examine current research on childhood stressors and learn specific strategies to promote physical and mental health, engagement in school, and overall well-being for children in elementary and middle school. We'll also explore the daily challenges of finding time for play, handling homework, choosing appropriate extracurricular activities, and promoting healthier lifestyles and deeper connections for the entire family. Classes include the following topics: • Re-Examining Success for our Children • School and Homework • The Importance of Play • Extracurricular Activities • Your Role as a Parent • Taking the Parenting Challenge This six-week course was designed by Challenge Success co-founders Dr. Madeline Levine, Dr. Denise Pope and Jim Lobdell. Challenge Success, a project of the Stanford University School of Education, focuses on three core areas: school reform, parent education and youth development. We work with parents, schools and youth to encourage development of the skills for success that are often overlooked in the current system – critical thinking, character, creativity, resilience, self-management, and engagement with learning. We believe the definition of success is different for every child, and through our hands-on workshops, conferences and presentations, we provide practical, research-based tools to help youth thrive in their own unique way. The class will be a maximum of 35 individuals. The fee is approximately $250. The teacher for the class will be one of the staff from Stanford's Challenge Success team. They are extremely impressive and well trained. One of the founders (Denise Pop, Madeline Levine, or Jim Lobdell will be present during one of the sessions. You can expect the class to provide you with a wealth of information and tools that will be useful in helping your children navigate the pressures of today's society. Please contact any of us from Stanley's Challenge Success Team if you have questions or would like to be placed on the wait-list. Thank you!
