From Counselor Corner:

At Stanley, we are experiencing a recent uptick in issues where Stanley Students are using technology in a way that can cause social conflicts that distract them from their attention to school. At times like these, it is always helpful for families to revisit the use of technology, texting and social networking for their teens.

The attached article was adapted from one of the articles on www.yoursphere.com, a free internet safety website for parents. On that website you will also find step by step guides on how to safety proof all of the technology interfaces in your house including ipads, iphones, xbox (and similar platforms), computers, google, youtube, etc… If you have any questions or would like to discuss these issues further, please contact the Stanley Counseling Department via the school office at 925-927-3530.

Hello Stanley Families-

The Winter Break is upon us, and I am both relieved and anxious to have everyone take a pause and spend some time recharging and enjoying time away from school. Another big congratulation to Bev Lathrope who helped Stanley students with our canned food drive which set a new record, collecting more than 8,900 pounds of food for the Contra Costa Food Bank. Also huge thanks to the Stanley Music Department, who put on the Winter Concert. These concerts involved hundreds of students, volunteers, parents, and were simply amazing- they proved once again how our enrichment and elective programs continue to thrive.

We have discovered over the past few weeks an increased amount of thefts across campus, especially with students’ personal electronics. While we have dealt with some of the incidents, we are very concerned that this is occurring at Stanley, and are taking steps to address the situation. We will be discussing this with all students at our grade level assemblies in January, and looking at better ways to store student backpacks to discourage theft. We will also be working with Berch Parker from the Lafayette police and student groups like leadership to collaborate on making our campus safer and secure for everyone.

Finally, I am pleased to announce the birth of my daughter Lyla Grace, who was born December 2nd. So many students have asked about her- it is yet another reminder of the caring and supportive community we share here in Lafayette. I look forward to my two weeks, even if it involves feeding and changing diapers!

From all of us at Stanley, have a wonderful break, and I look forward to coming back refreshed and ready to work in January!

Hello Stanley Families,

It is hard to believe we have already reached Thanksgiving--it seems like we just started school, and put our collective heads down to work…

Early this week you will be receiving a letter regarding a process we are undergoing called Program Improvement (PI).  While the letter gives details about what the PI process means, it is important to know we have taken this opportunity to look at the systems we have to support all our students, especially those with special needs.   Based on CST information from last spring, Stanley was identified as PI because our students with disabilities subgroup did not meet annual targets in English-Language Arts and Math.

Two important pieces of this process are mandated by the State and include:

·      Facilitating a group of stakeholders to investigate and evaluate the special education program at Stanley.  This group included Stanley special education and general education teachers; John Egnor, our director of student services; and Rachel Zinn, assistant superintendent.  Also included were parents of special education students, support staff and Stanley administration.  This group met for two full days to address these issues.

·      Drafting a Program Improvement plan to help address the needs identified by this group,  a large portion of which is reflected in the recently-approved School Site Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA).  This plan can be viewed on the LAFSD district website.

On Friday, December 9th, following the 8:45 am PTA meeting, I will be holding my regular Friday Forum in the library.  Included in the forum will be information about the PI process and our plan moving forward.  Joining me will be staff from the District Office including our Superintendent, Dr. Fred Brill.

Lafayette schools have a long reputation of consistently striving for improvement even when there is so much evidence of our success.  I am looking forward to using this process as another way to reflect on what we do and to work together to find ways to meet the needs of all students.  As we all spend some time this week reflecting on the many things we are thankful for, I wanted to convey my gratitude for working in a district that gives us the opportunity and the impetus to provide an educational program of the highest quality.

As always, if there are any questions about anything happening at Stanley, please contact me at 927-3530.
