ABSENCES:
If your child is going to be leaving school due to an
appointment, please remember to send a note to the
office before school starts. Please state in the note,
childs name, grade and the time that they will be
leaving. Also, if your child arrives late to school for any
reason, you need to bring your child to the office to
sign them in or send a note with them. We appreciate
your cooperation!
PLEASE DRIVE WITH CAUTION: St.
Mary's Road and School Street are very busy with
students coming and going to school. Please be
especially cautious and watch for students in the
crosswalks. Many times the anticipation of the school
day and the excitement of school dismissal causes
the students to be a little less aware of their
surroundings. We want to keep everyone safe and
accident free.
APPEARANCE POLICY REMINDER ~
Just a
reminder ~ Our dress code (length of skirt, shorts,
top , must reach the tips of the students' longest finger
when arms are at rest at students' side) applies even
when wearing leggings.
Individual tank tops must have 2 - inch shoulder
straps.
Skirts, shorts, skorts, and dresses must reach the tips
of the students' longest finger when arms are at rest
at students' sides.
The following ARE NOT appropriate or allowed ~
Halter and crop tops which reveal the midriff
Clothing which reveals undergarments
Clothing with holes
Unusual, distracting clothing and accessories.
Clothing with drug, alcohol, sexual, or violent themes
or clothing which puts forth a derogatory or
inflammatory message.
There is also an Appearance Policy REVISION that
came in your Welcome Back packets. Please review
this policy with your child(ren).
SCOLIOSIS SCREENING ON FRIDAY MARCH 19,
2010:
A screening for Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) will
be held on Friday, March 19th for all 7th grade girls
and 8th grade boys. This screening is mandated by
the State of California and is conducted by members
the Contra Costa County Nurses Association. It is
held during P.E. classes. It is suggested that the girls
wear a sports bra or bathing suit top under their
normal school clothing for the screening. The boys
will wear their usual P.E. uniform and remove their
shirts just before they are screened. If you do NOT
wish your child to participate, please send a written
notice to the school office (attention: Linda) by
Tuesday, March 16th .
ANNOUNCEMENT - MEASURE A
Our High Schools Are at Risk
Emergency mail-in parcel tax ballot, which must be
postmarked by April 28th, would raise funds needed
to avoid severe cuts at top-rated Acalanes,
Campolindo, Miramonte, and Las Lomas high
schools.
The state.s continuing budget crisis has forced our
high school district to significantly reduce its budget.
Without passage of Measure A by a two-thirds
majority, all current and future students will be
impacted via:
Severe loss of science, foreign language, English
social studies, arts and math classes
Elimination of 50 teaching positions and associated
academic programs, including AP electives
Reduction from a seven-period to six-period school
day
Curtailed counseling and college preparatory
resources
At $112 per parcel (less than 31 cents per day),
Measure A is a temporary and reasonable response
to an immediate funding crisis. It will sunset in five
years, and offers an exemption for residents age 65
and older.

Wildcats
of the Week are: Each week one student
from each grade level is chosen by a faculty
committee and is honored because of his/her good
citizenship, good peer relationships, positive school
contributions, academic effort and other related
criteria. Students selected exhibit desirable behaviors
an deserve as role models. The school year
culminates with a special event for "Wildcat of the
Week" winner. As. In all recognition programs, many
deserving students are bypassed. It is the intent of
this award to encourage all students to exhibit "The
Stanley Spirit" of respect, responsibility and
integrity.

What Can LASF do Next Year? The Answer
Depends on You! As state funding shrinks,
our schools become more reliant on the fundraising
and volunteer efforts of parent organizations and our
education foundation, LASF. Our success depends
on you.your donations, of course, but also your
volunteer efforts. We are recruiting volunteers at every
school site for next year and we would love to have
your help.
Would you be interested in helping with a Science or
Art Fair? Being a Donation Day representative or
Phonathon caller? Do you have graphic design,
photography or writing skills that you can offer? We
have all sorts of volunteer jobs of varying size and

Design your Destiny: Acalanes Digital
Design provides a stress free transition to high

Contest
Artists Wanted!
Enter the Friends of the Library Bookmark Contest
beginning March 1st ending March 24thth. Forms are
available at the Lafayette Library or your school
library. Please submit your entry form to your school
library or the Lafayette Library. Winners will be notified
Monday, March 29th and an Award Ceremony will take
place on Tuesday, April 13th at 6:30pm.
Green Rheem Film: Green Rheem
film nights are a chance to socialize with friends, enjoy
refreshments, and then watch an educational
documentary related to the environment. March's film
is "Chemical Reaction" is a documentary movie that
tells the story of one of the most powerful and effective
community initiatives in the history of North America. It
started with one lone voice in 1984. Dr. June Irwin, a
dermatologist, noticed a connection between her
patients. health conditions and their exposure to
chemical pesticides that include herbicides.
Thursday, March 11th, Rheem Theater, 350 Park
Street, Moraga (Rheem Shopping Center), the doors
open for refreshments in the lobby at 6pm and then
the movie starts around 7pm. Adults $10 online, $12

Lafayette Library - Homework Center Junior
High
Volunteer Tutors:
The goal of the Homework Help program is to improve
students study skills, provide necessary reference
materials, and ultimately, to increase the student.s
self-esteem and motivation to do well in school. The
program operates on a drop-in basis for student.s
grades elementary through high school. Tutoring
program hours M-TH 3-5:30.
Junior High aged volunteers will assist students in
grades 1-5 with homework assignments in a variety of
subjects including math, reading, school projects, or
other subject areas as specified by student.
Additionally, volunteers may simply help younger
students organize their backpack, determine what the
day.s homework is, and help them get started. If
comfortable, volunteers may assist peers with
homework , through high school aged or adult tutors
will be volunteering also. We request volunteers to
make a two-hour per week commitment, through the
end of the school year.

The Friends of the Lafayette Library "Sweet Thursday"
series welcomes Christine Carter, author of RAISING
HAPPINESS: 10 Simple Steps for More Joyful Kids
and Happier Parents. Carter, the Executive Director of
UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center, draws
on psychology, sociology and neuroscience, as well
as her own experiences as a parent, to show that
happiness (as in confident, kind, mindful and creative)
is a learned behavior and that it's never too late to help
our kids, not to mention ourselves, be happy.

Calling all GIRLS and BOYS who are interested in
water polo! Our Spring season runs March through
May and we have recently added TWO programs (Co-
ed Beginner/Novice and a Girls age-group program)

U.C Berkeley Business Academy:
The U.C. Berkeley Business Academy for Youth
provides middle school students with a two-week
introduction to the business world from the Haas
School of Business. The program offers 40 Bay Area
middle school students an exclusive opportunity to
gain hands-on learning experience in
Entrepreneurship, Corporate Social Responsibility,
Financial Accounting, Marketing and other basic
business fundamentals while exploring a business
idea, learning how to implement it and creating a web
site for their business. Discussions are conducted by
undergraduates and graduate business students at
the Haas School of Business as well as features
guest speakers and faculty lecturers.

Visual Arts Competition:
The Orinda Art Council's 7th Annual High School
Visual Arts Competition is currently underway at the
Orinda Library Art Gallery with over 250 entries from
students and high schools in Lamorinda! Exhibit runs
through the end of March. Winners will be announced
at the Artists' Reception next Wednesday, March 10,
4:30-6pm at the Orinda Library. Light refreshments
